River Severn, Seckly Wood

Brief description of fishery:

This length of the River Severn is on the right bank halfway between the historic town of Bewdley and the village of Arley. It is part of the Arley estate that is managed by the Arley Estate Trust charity. Included in our agreement with the trust are the rights to fish for salmon (a current EA Salmon licence required) as well as the normal coarse and game species.

There are 30 pegs of which some of the previous tenant’s numbers can be found on trees along the bank. To be fair currently a lot of these pegs are not accessible but with a rope for safety and care a good number can be reached. The higher number pegs start over the style by our car park. The first two pegs are on the right just over the style at the tail of an island they are good float pegs with about a foot of extra water on. Walking along the bank past the island you arrive at a cottage opposite the water intake for Trimpley reservoir, this is one of the deepest points (possibly the deepest) on the middle reaches of the river at approx. 20 – 25 feet deep.

Moving on along the footpath the next part is made of pools and riffles these being the most productive pegs for Barbel and Chub pleasure catch’s in excess of 100lb being possible in the summer months in the right conditions.

The last part up to peg one has very steep banks on the last part and is mainly fast water over clean gravel and rock. Pegs 8-10 being very productive and finally to peg one were our boundary is a stream entering the river from the forest under a wooden bridge.
