Stubby Leas Lake Elford

Brief description of fishery:

Stubby Leas Lake, Elford
Set just off the road between Elford and Whittington and within sight of the river Tame this 9 acre lake was taken over by the club in 2015.
We have worked closely with the environmental agency stocking tench, roach, rudd and perch, we have also carried out three stockings of carp to 24lbs to add to the original unknown quantity of carp when we took over the lake. Our initial stocking of carp in 2015 introduced 55 mirror and common carp between 8lbs and 17lbs 12ozs (including 30 doubles) with our second stocking taking place in 2022 with a further 37 common carp (including 27 doubles). In October 2022 several stunning looking 20lb plus mirror carp were stocked in the lake to 24lbs 5ozs these being all young C6 fish purchased from VS Fisheries. It is difficult to know what weight the carp go to in the lake as carp anglers are generally shy regarding their catches but we know of carp from the original stocking exceeding 26lbs and with the young stock introduced as well as a feeding program hopefully this will offer a bright future.

There are a variety of pegs all round the lake and in amongst the mature woodland. There is a parking area adjacent the lake and a track all around the lake to allow for kit to be dropped off.

The old quarry works have been reinstated to farm land and the pool enjoyed a reasonably rural and secluded aspect.

In June 2018 working parties carried out the planting of 150 flag iris plants around the lake to improve water quality during the summer months as suggested by the environmental agency as well as  two floating islands installed in the lake which provide fish refuges from predators. Several trees were felled in to the lake to provide fish refuges to protect the fish from cormorant predation, this was carried out in area not normally used for fishing.

The lake being a typical gravel pit dug in the 1980’s and it has plenty of bars, channels and islands with depths ranging 14ft in the main part down to a couple of feet in the shallow top part of the lake
